Exclusions

This Promotion is not open to members of the general public. Limitations

Blog activity participation must be completed between March 14, 2011 and April 30, 2011. To earn a webinar award, Participant must join the webinar within 5 minutes of the scheduled session beginning, and must be attended through the completion of the scheduled session. Webinar must be attended between March 14, 2011 and April 30, 2011.

To earn a product demonstration award, Participant must complete the product demonstration between March 14, 2011 and April 30, 2011. Demonstration must be led by a Westlaw Litigator tools product specialist. Award Fulfillment

Completion of an eligible activity entitles a Participant to the appropriate level award, subject to verification at Sponsor’s reasonable discretion, and further constitutes consent to and agreement with the Terms and Conditions of this Promotion and official Promotions communications and publications by Sponsor, including on the WestlawInsider.com blog.

Gift cards or electronic gift codes earned through the Promotion will be provided to eligible participants within four (4) weeks of participation. For starters, there are a staggering number of state and federal statutes and regulations. In addition, state legislatures use a wide variety of terminology to refer to the same thing. As a result, your search must cast a net so wide that you inevitably retrieve an overwhelming list of documents, few of which are relevant.

One solution is to use the Reg & Leg Center, which was released on Westlaw this week. Just click Add a Tab and select a Reg & Leg Center page as you would any other tabbed page.  

When you use the Reg & Leg Center, you don’t have to guess all the possible terms used in the statutes or regulations you need. Instead, just type keywords in the text box (e.g., notice of cancellation of insurance policy) and click Scan. The Reg & Leg Center automatically creates checklists of topics, jurisdictions, and agencies.

From there, it’s a matter of checking boxes that might apply. Click View Results, and you retrieve existing statutes and regulations from as many topical categories and jurisdictions as you specify, as well as any or all of the following:

• public laws
• session laws
• agency materials
• pending bills
• pending regulations
• legislative history materials
• bill tracking
• editorially supplied summaries

In addition, the Reg & Leg Center makes it easy to create alerts and customized reports, so that you’re never caught unaware by sudden statutory or regulatory changes.

• Intellectual property administrative filings for the International Trade Commission (ITC), Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (BPAI), and Trademark Trials and Appeals Board (TTAB)
• Access to United States Patent and Trademark Office Official Gazette database (FIP-OG-PAT)

New IP administrative filings

Sure to be highly valuable to patent and trademark litigators and prosecutors crafting their own arguments, the ITC, BPAI, and TTAB filings include briefs, motions, and responses, and are linked to the corresponding decisions, as well as to KeyCite, IP filing rules, Westlaw Profiler documents, and other IP documents. Though these filings are currently available on government sites, they are not associated with the appropriate decision, and locating them can be a challenge.

The new filings, which will be particularly useful in retrieving material involving a specific legal issue or judge, can also be searched in the U.S. International Trade Commission Filings (USITC-FILINGS), Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences Filings (BPAI-FILINGS),Trademark Trial and Appeal Board Filings (TTAB-FILINGS), or Intellectual Property Administrative Filings (IPADMIN-FILINGS) databases, all released this week.

United States Patent and Trademark Office Official Gazette database (FIP-OG-PAT)

The United States Patent and Trademark Office Official Gazette database will provide easy, searchable access to the Official Gazette, the primary official record of USPTO announcements (e.g., of proposed rulemaking) and actions (e.g., issuance of reexamination certificates). Coverage of notices begins with December 1994; coverage of ex parte and inter partes reexaminations begins with October 2009.
