The scores of Westlaw power users who attended the first two webinars in our WestlawNext research expert series asked lots of great questions – so great, in fact, that we decided to
share the answers right here.

If you’ve seen WestlawNext in action, you know that it searches in an entirely new way. Rather than choosing a database first, you simply search through all of West’s core legal content and secondary sources in a single pass. The system gives you multiple ways to slice and dice the results, so you can quickly pinpoint the best resources.
OK, that’s great – but how are these supercharged search results organized? This is a question we’ve heard from many of you, so we asked Kim Ellenberg, a West reference attorney, to explain.
Reference attorneys like Kim answer questions like this every day, and they played a critical role in shaping WestlawNext in the years leading up to its launch. The feedback from customers continues daily, and reference attorneys continue to suggest enhancements to WestlawNext based on what they hear from you.
So please keep the queries coming – and know that, even if we can’t respond directly, we do make note of every comment and tweet that comes our way.

“Time sneaks up on you like a windshield on a bug.” – John Lithgow
We all sense that proverbial windshield lurking behind us, which may be why we’re always looking for new ways to carve out more time for the things we love.
For Sarah C., an associate at a Denver law firm, WestlawNext has provided one more way to do that.
“The great thing about WestlawNext is the less time that I spend researching, the more time I can spend outside riding my bike or skiing or running,” she told Jenny at the WestlawNext preview breakfast event in the spectacular Mile-High City. (You can see the Denver video here.)
Along with that extra time, Sarah will have a boost of extra caffeine to fuel her outdoor adventures. As the fourth and final winner of our What’s Next Trivia contest, she’ll be receiving a $30 Starbucks gift card for correctly naming the type of hat worn by Johnny and Jenny in the Dallas and Denver videos. (It was a cowboy hat, of course.) Congratulations, Sarah!
And thanks to everyone who played along over the past several weeks. We had a blast with the videos and the trivia contest, and we hope you did too.
The John Lithgow quote came from Uncle Anthony’s Unabridged Analogies: Quotes & Proverbs for Lawyers and Lecturers, which is available at a 10% discount to Westlaw Insider readers. (That means you!)

There’s an old Chinese proverb* that says, “Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come.” Well, OK – but what would you keep in your coat to attract a flamingo?
Perhaps Jenny Westlaw knows the secret. At any rate, Holly R., a library manager at a law firm in San Francisco, clearly knows her tall pink birds, like the one that tried to pick Jenny’s pocket at Busch Gardens in Tampa. By correctly answering our What’s Next Trivia question, Holly became the third winner of a $30 Starbucks gift card. Congratulations, Holly!
You may have seen Holly before, although you might not recognize her. She appeared in our San Francisco preview breakfast video as an audience member – and she’s also appeared in studio audiences for The Rosie O’Donnell Show and a recent episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Holly’s on-camera career may not be over yet. “I’m trying to get tickets now to The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” she says. “Maybe if Ellen knew I was a professional audience member, she would send me tickets to go!” Ellen – are you listening?
There’s still time to play the next round of What’s Next Trivia with Johnny & Jenny Westlaw for a chance at $30 in Starbucks gift cards. Here’s what to do:
One winner will be chosen at random from the entries we receive, so keep following along! (For more information, see the official rules.)
