Authors’ Reception for the Third Edition of
Commercial Litigation in New York State Courts

The sessions have covered a wide range of subjects, from contracts and negotiating to compliance and ethics to managing a law department.

A few highlights:

• How and Why to Take your Records Program Global. The session covered some recent court decisions in this area, went through some case studies based on the experiences of the panelists, and concluded by walking through a framework for setting up a comprehensive records and information management program.  Components of this framework include governance, policy, process, data, application, and infrastructure.
• Managing Litigation in a Foreign Jurisdiction. The panel discussed the differences between “on-off” cases that are actionable in only one jurisdiction and true multijurisdictional cases.  The panel also went over factors to consider in selecting foreign counsel, selecting the appropriate jurisdiction(s), preparing for a multijurisdictional case, how to manage reporting from foreign counsel, and controlling costs.
• Multiple sessions centered on technology for legal departments. More legal departments are using “cloud”-based software rather than software that you need to buy and store on your own servers. One early concern was that the data would not be physically stored at the location, but security advancements, cost savings, and the ease of setup (you just log on) have been driving this trend.

Traffic at the West booth has been unbelievable. WestlawNext has been a huge hit with attendees, who seem to be most impressed by the clean interface, the ease of use, and the ability to folder and share their research.  They’re also excited about the mobile applications for WestlawNext.

West’s 10 grand prize raffles are also creating some buzz. So far we’ve given away iPads to eight lucky attendees, and we can’t wait to give out the remaining two today.

With so many hot topics and new products to stay up-to-date on, it’s reinforcement of just how valuable the ACC 2010 Annual Meeting has been for in-house attorneys.

The ACC annual meeting provides a great opportunity to discuss the unique challenges faced by in-house counsel, earn CLE/CPD credit, and see what’s new from over 100 different legal service providers.

On Monday, the team was on Wacker Drive, near the entrances of several prominent Chicago law firms in the vicinity of Madison, Adams, and Monroe streets.  On Tuesday, the team could be spotted bright and early on Kinzie and Clark streets with their hot coffee.  Later they were spotted, again, near Wacker Drive.
